Where do I start?

 

Your gemstone cutting training starts with the Basic Gemstone Cutting Class, designed to establish a solid foundation and guide you toward professional-level gem cutting skills. Each class builds upon the techniques and knowledge gained in earlier courses, supporting a step-by-step path to the Professional Gemstone Faceter. All required equipment, textbooks, project manuals, and facet-grade materials are included. Courses run over two consecutive days with a blend of practical and theoretical instruction.

Do I need to enroll all five classes at once?

 

You have the flexibility to enroll in individual classes and progress at your own pace. Each class builds on the knowledge and techniques gained from the previous one. Your journey starts with Basic Gemstone Cutting and concludes with the Technical Class. You can choose to enroll in one class at a time or complete the entire program within ten days.

What will I learn in Intermediate Gemstone Cutting?

 

This class builds upon the skills learned in Basic Gemstone Cutting. You will advance in understanding the cutting process, with training to identify cutting and polishing issues, as well as the terminology used to communicate throughout the process. You will facet a complete gemstone from start to finish. The class lasts 2 days, totaling 16 hours of gemstone cutting.

What skills will I learn in Advance Two Gemstone Cutting?
 
By the completion of Advanced Two Class, students are expected to demonstrate the ability to dop, cut, and polish independently, requiring only minimal guidance from the instructor. At this stage, the instructor’s role shifts to that of a coach, providing strategic input on complex or situational challenges related to recutting and polishing of gemstone. Emphasis is placed on developing the student’s ability to assess and execute recutting decisions aimed at maximizing weight retention and light performance.

What gemstone cutting equipment will I be trained on?
 
Kgemstones uses Imahashi gem faceting equipment which has been custom rebuilt for accurate repeatability for professional gem cutting. Kgemstones manufactures all their cutting and polishing metal laps. All the other equipment has been custom manufactured by Kgemstones. All your learned skills easily transfers to the use of other brands and types of faceting equipment.

Do I need to purchase faceting equipment?

​We recommend waiting to purchase equipment until you have completed the Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced One courses. By the time you reach Advanced Two, you will have a solid understanding of faceting and will be better equipped to focus on the selection, use, and maintenance of your faceting equipment.

What will I learn in Basic Gemstone cutting?

 

Basic Gemstone Cutting can be challenging as it introduces a new skill, laying the foundation for training your eye and understanding the cutting process. The faceting equipment is introduced as you cut a gemstone. You will facet one complete gemstone. All necessary equipment, textbooks, project manuals, and facet-grade materials are provided. The class spans two days, totaling 16 hours of hands-on training.

What will I learn in Advance One Gemstone Cutting?

 

Advanced One Class focuses on dopping and transferring challenges, polishing issues, and adjusting angles. You will learn to recognize cutting and polishing problems, understand how to correct them, and develop a trained eye for identifying surface issues. Emphasis is placed on building precise communication skills for referencing cutting and polishing positions.

What is Technical Gemstone Cutting Class? 
 
Technical Class focuses on the technical aspects of gem cutting equipment. Students will gain a thorough understanding of equipment maintenance, balancing, maintenance of metal cutting and polishing laps, troubleshooting faceting equipment problems, and understanding how to correct these issues while also dispelling common gemstone cutting myths. The student will gain understanding in evaluating faceting machines to determine its quality. This course is designed to elevate the student’s knowledge to a professional standard, distinguishing serious practitioners from hobbyists.

The equipment I train on, is it available for purchase?
 
Yes, we offer equipment for purchase, with two different faceting setups available: a professional setup and an entry-level setup. The professional setup is higher in cost but is designed for a professional business level of cutting. The entry-level setup is more affordable and provides quality equipment for faceting gemstones.
