ABOUT Kgemstones

Kgemstones was introduced to the art of gemstone cutting from the Burmese, Thai, and Sri Lankan cutters. After attending classes, seminars, and demonstrations from Burmese, Thai, Sri Lankan, and American cutters, it became clear that each group had slightly different techniques and approaches. These variations were often influenced by the maintenance of the machines and laps, as well as compensating for poorly manufactured equipment, and just making up of myths of how to do things. These practices always conflicted with basic machining principles, cutting and polishing, and the crystallography of gemstone material.

These unsound practices sparked further curiosity, raising numerous unanswered questions. As a result, Kgemstones conducted extensive research to discover the correct methods for cutting gemstone material based on crystallography, ensuring the proper angles to achieve the best light return to the eye. Through this research, it became clear that most, if not all, gemstones cut in the international market were faceted incorrectly, leading to issues such as extinction or windowing. Dealers and other international cutters often referred to these problems as 'sleepy stones' and 'fish-eyed stones.

To address these issues and maximize the yield of a sell-able gemstone from the crystal rough or recut, Kgemstones focused on crystallography. This journey led to the decision to attend the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and earn the prestigious GIA Graduate Gemologist diploma. While gemstone cutting knowledge is essential, it is equally important for the cutter to understand the faceting equipment, as achieving repeatability and accurate indexing would otherwise be impossible.

In response to this, Kgemstones designed and manufactured a faceting machine for international air travel, along with custom metal cutting and polishing laps. Kgemstones became a member of the United States Faceters Guild (USFG) and, using the faceting machine designed, won the Pre-Master Division award in 2023, earning the title of Certified Pre-Master Cutter. The pursuit of answers to these questions also inspired Kgemstones to develop a gemstone cutting course that incorporates all the essential aspects needed to become a professional gemstone cutter.

Kgemstones has developed a comprehensive five-class intensive training program designed to guide anyone toward mastering gemstone faceting. This program is designed to guide participants from having little or no prior knowledge of gemstone cutting to mastering the essential trade skills required to work as a professional gemstone cutter in the gem industry. Through progressive, hands-on training, attendees will develop proficiency in cutting, polishing, and evaluating gemstones to meet industry standards, preparing them for successful careers in the global gem trade. Each class builds on the knowledge and techniques developed in the previous course, providing a clear progression from Basic Gemstone Cutting to the Technical Class. You have the flexibility to progress at your own pace by enrolling in individual classes or completing the entire program within ten days to achieve the skills of a Professional Gemstone Faceter.

In addition to our training programs, Kgemstones offers professional consultation services in gemological identification, including gemstone cutting consultation, as well as recutting or re-polishing services. We also specialize in gemstone heat treatment consultations, ensuring that each stone reaches its highest potential.

Located in Chiang Mai, Thailand and in the USA, Kgemstones is led by a team of award-winning gemstone cutters and GIA Graduate Gemologists. We are actively engaged in the international gemstone trade, with strong connections in Burma, Thailand, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Africa, and the USA. Our expertise extends to heat treatment of gemstones, particularly focusing on rubies and sapphires.

Kgemstones has also designed and manufactured a portable gemological lab and faceting machine which is equipped with an Imahashi hand-piece, for convenient international air travel. This unique setup allows us to travel to gem-producing regions to evaluate and purchase gemstone materials, provide cutting instruction, and expand our global gemstone business.

Kgemstones also offers expert guidance on purchasing faceting equipment, ensuring that owners acquire the right tools to achieve their desired results. Whether you're looking for entry-level equipment or a professional-grade setup, we help you select the best options tailored to your needs.
